New Orleans Kit New Orleans Kit. In 1721 the Company of the Indies brought a group of prostitutes to New Orleans to become wives for the colonists. One of the military leaders had requested the women because his "men were in the woods chasing Indian girls." When the prostitutes arrived some of them were not interested in starting a new life and preferred the oldest profession. 150 years later the tradition continued on a quiet street within walking distance of the French Quarter gambling houses and bordellos. The proprietress known to her gentleman callers as Belle was well known for her discretion among her wealthy clientele. Her girls, some from well to do families who had lost everything during the great war, were known for their beauty and grace. Belle's New Orleans house contained a parlor, kitchen and dining area on the first floor and on the second floor there were two rooms for gentlemen callers and washroom for the girls.
